One of the great (yet fully tapped) character traits of Mark Ruffalo's character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that his body holds two very distinct personalities, The Hulk and Bruce Banner, whom despite their obvious differences complement each other.
While doing the press rounds for Now You See Me 2, the three-time Oscar-nominee ("The Kids Are All Right", "Foxcatcher", "Spotlight") teased an inner (and quite possibly outer body) conflict between Banner and the Big Green Guy.
"I think the arc that he is ultimately making in his relationship with The Hulk and how that's gonna resolve itself, that's really where ... nobody has gone to that place," Ruffalo told Collider. "He's always been running from him or trying to deny it but they are coming for a collision course with each other and i think that could be pretty exciting if we can figure out a way, how to do it — multi-dimensionally." Ruffalo then turns to his Now You See Me 2 co-star Woody Harrelson and enthusiastically says to him, "Hulk versus Banner! Yeah, baby!" They then give each other a high-five. Ruffalo concludes, "The only person in the world that The Hulk is scared of, or thing, is Banner."
The comics has housed many inner and outer battles between the Hulk and Banner that could potentially serve as inspiration for whatever struggle we may end up seeing between the two characters on the big screen. Furthermore, Thor: Ragnarok screenwriters Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle wrote a very similar story for one of the two-part animated film Hulk Vs., which saw Loki kidnapping Bruce Banner and separating him from the Hulk, killing the former and releasing the latter upon Asgard.
Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok also stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Karl Urban as Skurge, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Jamie Alexander as Sif.
Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3, 2017.
